Quick Fix: Essentials Connector Install Fails after Windows 10 Rollback

metroI was helping a friend with some Essentials Connector install issues last night. One of the clients was a Windows 7 Pro machine, that had recently been rolled back from Windows 10. On this network the Server was a Windows Home Server 2011, and the connector had been working fine following the upgrade to Windows 10. After the roll back, the backups stopped working, so my friend decided to uninstall the connector and reinstall.

This is when he discovered he could not reinstall the connector. It would get to around 99.9% complete, and even appear in the dashboard, but at the last second the progress bar would start going back to the start and we would see an error on the Connector install screen.

Rename a client on an Essentials network

Dont PanicI see this question crop up a lot, and people can get themselves tied up in knots second guessing the Essentials Dashboard.  The key thing to remember is DON’T PANIC, as our dear friend Arthur Dent was often told.

Firstly, why do you want to rename your pc? Actually scratch that, you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t have a good reason. (Obviously)

Secondly, how are you planning to do this? Because, stop right now.. thank you very much. (excuse the Spice Girls reference) Read more of this post

Install Windows Server Essentials with a Custom Domain Suffix

After a brief argument with Susan Bradley, and i use the term brief and argument loosely, Grey Lancaster and i were left with a problem…

So can someone blog that/post that on TechNet so that folks aren’t hacking up what they are doing now?

Grey, of course, deferred to me. So here i am Saturday night and I’m writing this. I don’t mind of course because i have nothing better to do, but i digress.

Yes, you can install Essentials 2012 R2 (and probably other versions) with any domain suffix, not just the “.local” that the Essentials Configuration Wizard (ECW) will default to..

You cannot restore files from Windows Server Essentials

LogoYou may be aware that a recent update broke the restore wizard that is a key component of client PC backup in Windows Server Essentials.

A hotfix was released that fixed the issue for Windows 7, but Windows 8 was not included.

Yesterday Microsoft updated the Hotfix to now include a Windows 8 version. Great news if you are waiting on file recovery. Slightly disappointing it has taken quite so long, but who knows maybe it was harder to fix on Windows 8!
